Air Pollution Board Emission Testing Update
Update June 22, 2020: Vehicle Emission Testing remains in effect prior to
titling or renewing a vehicle registration until repeal is approved by the
United State Environment Protection Agency (EPA). All area testing centers are
open with limited contact testing and contactless payment. To view area testing
centers hours of operation and Opus Inspection’s updated COVID-19 policies and
procedures visit www.tnvip.org . All tag renewals require an emission test. An
emission test is also required for ALL first time applications purchased June
1, 2020 and after.
First time applications with a purchase date prior to June 1, 2020 do not
require an emission test.
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation announced in May 2019
that they will recommend elimination of emission testing in counties, including
Hamilton. The State Implementation Plan revisions eliminating the vehicle
emissions testing program were submitted to the EPA on February 27, 2020. The
program will end 120 days after the EPA approves the State Implementation Plan
revisions. Updates will be posted as they become available.
